A Dumpster Rental As A Housewarming Gift?

A Dumpster Rental As A Housewarming Gift?
While it may sound odd to offer a dumpster rental as a present for a housewarming party, the idea is actually pretty creative.  A traditional gift of wine, kitchen gadgets or decor may seem like a safe bet but the wager is pretty high that the new homeowner will have more pressing concerns than a birdhouse in their backyard.  Here are a few reasons why you might just be giving them the best present ever.

Previous Junk
They may be moving into a place that is full of the previous owner’s discarded items or trash.  While some items can be reused or shown new love, most of it is just refuse that needs to go.  Often times it is an entire attic, garage or basement that is full and the load is far too large for the local waste management company.  In these cases, your loved one might not have the money for a dumpster rental or not have the time to run smaller loads to a local dump.  Your gift would help expedite the move-in process and take the pressure off of managing a clean out.

Desperate Updates
Often times when someone moves into an older home some areas may require extra TLC.  A bathroom may need to be remodeled, carpet may need to be ripped up or there might be repairs that are needed immediately to make the home livable.  With the entire process of moving, buying or renting and the cost of the remodel and/or repair itself, your loved one may not have the budget needed to include a dumpster rental.  Instead of living in disarray until they can get everything together, your gift would allow them to address the problem pronto and get back to enjoying the new chapter of their lives.

A Tight Fit
Whether they move into a larger space or downsize, your loved one may need to get rid of some of their stuff during this move.  Maybe their stuff is too big for a smaller space or they just want to get all new furniture sets for a fresh start.  Many times you can donate old items to a thrift store or not-for-profit but if they need it gone yesterday or can’t seem to get rid of it, a dumpster will solve the problem.  They’ll always remember how you made their lives a little easier with such a thoughtful gift.

Emergency Services
When someone moves into a new home, they may not know a disaster is looming ahead.  Unless the home is built brand new, you never truly know every tiny thing that lurks inside the existing structure.  Home inspections are important because they find glaring issues right off the bat but even the best inspections can’t predict everything.  Old pipes may burst or electrical may need to be replaced and the new owner finds themselves in an emergency situation.  In such cases, your offer of a dumpster rental might just save the day.

Peace of Mind
Sure, your housewarming gift may not be traditional but it just might be the best present those new homeowners ever receive.  Considering that you never know what life will throw at you when you enter a new residence, it could lift a burden from some stressful shoulders.  By hiring a reliable dumpster rental service that offers same day delivery, you will be providing your loved ones with the greatest gift of all.  Peace of Mind.

Ten of the Most Deadly Christmas Toys!

Dangerous Toys Vid Courtesy of Top Trending

Some Christmas toys are not the most ideal to find under your tree.  Besides the wonderful goodies listed in the vid above, there are a few others that are my personal favorite entries to the “Deadly Toys” category.

In the 1950’s there was the Austin Magic Pistol.  It allowed you to fire plastic balls by loading magic crystals and water into the back of the gun.  Unfortunately, the magic crystals were dangerous chemicals that could kill a child if swallowed.  What made the balls fly with force through the air was the Calcium Carbide that, when interacting with a liquid, forms a flammable gas.  Yep.  A Fireball.  A fireball that shot out and often blew out the back of the gun into the shooter’s face.  Talk about a Christmas that is merry and BRIGHT!

Another wonderful addition to the toy market was the Atomic Energy Lab kit produced by the American Basic Science Club.  The idea behind the kit was to teach children about science of the future and new sources of energy that we can utilize.  Sadly, the kit came with REAL samples of uranium and radium.  Both substance are highly radioactive and the sample of uranium was the same kind used in construction of the atomic bombs.  One simple exposure to these substances is enough to cause cancer which led to them being discontinued TWO YEARS LATER.  Cheers to Science!

The toy company, Gilbert, has to be my own favorite company for innovative and highly dangerous toys.  Not only did they create the marvelous glass blowing kit but they were responsible for the Lead Casting Kit, which required you to create toys from MOLTEN LEAD, and the Chemistry Set, which taught kids how to create explosions with gunpowder on page 1.  Other gems included in the set were potassium permanganate, which is poisonous and causes things to catch fire, and ammonium nitrate, which is used in homemade bombs.

And, not to be outdone by the American Basic Science Club, Gilbert made their own version of atomic energy kits including the same samples of radioactive materials.  The Gilbert kit also supplied a Geiger counter so you could measure the amount of radiation that your play session just exposed you to.  Thoughtful to the very end!

If you receive any of these gifts for Christmas, you may want to do a mass toss into your nearest dumpster rental.  Radioactive materials, fireballs and fairies that poke your eye out are not exactly the images of Christmas cheer that you want to remember.  Aunt Edna’s fruitcake sounds really good right about now, doesn’t it?

Dumpster Living - Would You Do It?

A dumpster often brings to mind images of stinky garbage and skittering vermin but for some individuals they represent the ultimate freedom.  Many creative dreamers across the globe have taken to re-purposing these trash takeaways into functional and adorable tiny homes.  They come in all styles and serve many purposes from base functionality to energy-saving, cost-effective bungalows.  This new swell of creative recycling has ushered in a new phase of tiny home building called Dumpster Living.

Why Would Someone Live In A Dumpster?
The reasons for shacking up inside a waste receptacle are as varied as the people who choose this life.  With the world in a state of over-consumption and heavy waste output, some are trying to lessen their global footprint and be more environmentally friendly.  For others the downsizing provides a relief from heavy financial burden.  With the materialism and disposable mentality in the world today, many crave a simpler way of life.  A life less governed by stuff and more about enjoying what is around them.  Here are a few examples of folks who are dumpster living successfully.

Professor Dumpster
In Texas, University College professor, Jeff Wilson, has turned dumpster living into a massive social experiment.  Parked in a corner of the campus, Wilson encourages students to study the benefits of living simpler.  He started out sleeping on bare cardboard and, over months, slowly implements various features to see what we absolutely need to live a happy life.  His first feature after 6 months was a basic A/C window unit considering the box would climb up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit in the Austin heat.  Wilson and his students monitor the social and environmental benefits of “Project Dumpster” and enacted phases such as solar panels, a shower and a composting toilet.  The final phase was to have the dumpster looking and functioning like a completely sustainable tiny house.

Wilson thinks this experiment will show us how an over-populated world might be able to live and survive happily and still retain a good quality of life.  It will also provide insight on how this small, sustainable unit can save energy, recycle basic elements and have a better impact on the environment.  One thing Professor Wilson has noticed is that a lack of mindless amenities, like television, and a need to use laundromats have opened his eyes to the world around him.  He walks through the Austin neighborhoods more often, has met so many new people and experienced such incredible things that would never have been possible if he were trapped inside with a Lazy Boy and a flat screen.

“Professor Dumpster” plans on having elementary school programs centered around learning the benefits of this unit and even allows advocate or university groups to spend a few days dumpster living.  While still an experiment, Wilson claims it has provided him “a better life than I had before.”

Party Cubes And Houses For The Homeless
California designer, Greg Kloehn, is one resourceful artist.  He enjoys using basic scrap materials found in dumpsters and on curbs to create art that speaks for itself and also serves a greater purpose.  Kloehn created a dumpster house complete with compost toilet, running water, propane stove, storage compartments and movable cushions to create seating or lounge areas.  His waterproof dumpster also boasts bubble wrap, aluminum and half-inch plywood insulation.  Welding nuts to the dumpster’s exterior has allowed Kloehn to bolt on a myriad of features such as a shower head, shaving mirror and rooftop umbrella pole.  Kloehn encourages visitors to his Brooklyn dumpster home to explore the basic features and often has police offers stopping by for hot dogs.

One of the best projects Kloehn has done is taken scraps and refuse from all over and created tiny homes for the homeless.  With windows, doors, wood flooring and shelving, it provides a bit of security and escape from the elements for no cost.  The only purchase Kloehn makes are screws, glue and paintbrushes because he recycles all of the other home building materials from the streets.  After he’s finished, he gives each new owner a lock, key and a bottle of champagne.  Another Kloehn project was attempting to turn shipping containers into an upscale bar and restaurant complete with a deck and DJ station.

Family Vacation Home
Jamie and Brad Bigelow wanted to create a dream sanctuary on their friend’s ranch among the beautiful boulders of Arizona.  Looking for a cost-effective solution that would allow them to focus on the scenery, they purchased an old dumpster for $800.  Brad and his family hung siding and drywall and created a huge wood deck from discarded scaffolding plank that they found.  There is no electricity or running water but a small generator powers the lights and they have an outhouse right next door.  The home is decorated with vintage lanterns and tables which give it a beautiful but rustic feel.  The Bigelow’s love going out there to stargaze and only spent a mere 13K to complete the entire project.

Dutch Recycling
Holland residents, Rikkert Paauw and Jet van Zwieten, created FOUNDation Projects, which is a concept of taking dumpsters and making them the foundations for tiny houses or meeting places.  They collect waste material and discarded objects to build upon the dumpsters and make community spaces for folks to socialize.  Their project, Straat Lokaal, collected waste and donated objects to build alternative bars and spaces for artists and entrepreneurs.  Being able to be rolled around the city, this project promoted recycling and object re-use while shedding light on responsible waste disposal.  The Dutch architects run many similar concepts through FOUNDation Projects and are often working on building custom items from wood pallets and scrap metal.

No matter what the purpose, with a little creativity and some elbow grease you could turn a dumpster into a functioning and quality structure.  With the environmentally friendly features you can build in and the cost-saving customization, you can have a cozy home, bustling business or interactive meeting place.  With the rise in cost of living and over crowding issues in particular areas, dumpster living may just be the next hot phase of real estate endeavors for those considering tiny homes.  With a focus on enjoying experiences and not taking on more than necessary, dumpster living can hold quite an appeal.  Just make sure not to park your future home on top of a hill.

Choosing The Best Dumpster Rental Service

Not every dumpster rental service is created equal.  While they may have the same type of materials, there are quite a few factors to consider when choosing the right company to help you complete your project.  By asking yourself the questions below, you should be able to make the best decision for your project, your budget and your sanity.
Are they professional?
Do they have a variety of products?
What is their availability?
Are you able to communicate with them?
Do they charge a flat fee?
What about extra fees and scheduling a pick up?
What can you put in that dumpster?
How long can you keep your dumpster?

ARE THEY PROFESSIONAL?
This pertains to how the business and employees conduct themselves.  Are they courteous and polite or rude and unwilling to answer your questions?  How a company and its representatives treat you is a huge indicator of what experience you will have renting a dumpster from them.  Usually you can not gauge this until you start working with a business but many times you can tell by how they interact with you on the phone by how serious they react to your project or emergency and if they are informative and thoroughly answer your questions.

DO THEY HAVE A VARIETY OF PRODUCTS?
Some dumpster rental companies only deal with large construction projects and only offer 40 yard dumpsters.  If the information for dumpster sizes is not on their website or in their marketing literature, just ask them.  Ideally you want to work with a company that can offer you 3 or 4 different sizes in dumpsters so you know that, no matter what kind of project you work on or if your project ends up becoming bigger than you expected, they will have a dumpster for what you need.  If you end up calling to ask them, you also have an opportunity to hear how professional they are and how they treat their clients.

WHAT IS THEIR AVAILABILITY?
If the dumpster rental company keeps suggesting a 30 yard dumpster for your small landscaping job, they may have run out of product or only specialize in renting large dumpsters.  This applies not only to their dumpsters but to the company as well.  Can you never reach them or do they never seem to be open when you need them?  This is a huge factor to consider if you have an emergency and need assistance immediately or are facing time limits.  A well-established company will likely have plenty of resources available to its customers and be ready when you need them.

ARE YOU ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM?
Establishing a simple line of communication and having great customer service are crucial when renting a dumpster because projects can turn out differently or have variables in play.  Having a company that is willing to work with you and make sure all unexpected events are accounted for or handled well make all the difference.
  • Are you able to reach them on the phone?
  • Do they answer your questions promptly and with confidence?
  • Do they keep their promises of delivery times?
  • Do they follow up with you if they need to find out an answer?
  • Are their locations easily accessible?
There may be things you can’t experience until you work with them but, in the meantime, you can scroll reviews or customer testimonials online.  Don’t be afraid to ask every question you can until you are comfortable.  You are the one spending the money.  A good dumpster rental company has no problem addressing any and all concerns and with making sure you are completely confident in your decision.
How To Choose A Reliable Dumpster Rental Company
DO THEY CHARGE A FLAT FEE?
Some companies charge by the ton, which is called Variable Rate pricing.  In this circumstance, you don’t know the total until the dumpster is hauled away and the final bill comes.   The advantage to this pricing is if you know exactly how much debris you will have.  In some circumstances, this ends up to be a cheaper option.

Flat Fee pricing is when you are charged one standard fee for the rental and pick up.  The advantage to this is that you know the total you will pay beforehand and can adjust your project budget to account for it.  By not overfilling your dumpster and staying well within the posted lines and limits printed on your dumpster, you can save even more money.  Most people prefer Flat Fee pricing.

WHAT ABOUT EXTRA FEES AND SCHEDULING A PICK UP?
A reputable dumpster rental company should inform you of any extra fees you may be liable for up front.  These fees only happen if certain violations occur.
Typical Extra Fees:
Hazardous Materials – If you put prohibited items into the dumpster such as oils, paints, car batteries, etc.
Overfill – If you exceed your dumpster’s weight limit or leave piles of trash around the dumpster that the driver has to load.
Extension / Late – If you go beyond your rental period.
Trip Charge – If the driver can not pick up the dumpster due to some sort of obstruction.  Also known as a “wasted trip”.

As far as pick ups, many companies require you to call them and schedule the dumpster to be picked up when you are finished.  Some people assume the company will automatically come at the end of their rental period and pick it up.  This is often NOT the case and they end up being charged late fees.  ALWAYS ask the company prior to starting your rental so you know if scheduling a pick up is your responsibility.

WHAT CAN YOU PUT IN THAT DUMPSTER?
Believe it or not, there is a list of prohibited items that can not be discarded into a dumpster rental.  You can see a list of the prohibited items HERE.  Some dumpster rental companies will take certain items for an extra fee or may make an exception on something.  ALWAYS ASK.  They can give you more information on what they might take and can provide you with a complete list of prohibited materials.

HOW LONG CAN YOU KEEP YOUR DUMPSTER?
This can potentially have two answers.  First and foremost is how long your dumpster rental company is allowing you for your rental period.  They should tell you the length of your rental and when you need to consider scheduling your pick up.  Second, you should find out from your village or township if they have any limitations on how long a dumpster can be on your property.  They may have a much shorter time frame for you to be allowed to use your dumpster.  Call your village hall or township office for more details.

Luckily, finding an honest, reputable dumpster rental company isn’t impossible.  You can go based off of family or friend recommendations, check online reviews or simply call the company directly and see for yourself.  By keeping these key factors in mind, you are armed with the knowledge to choose the best option for you and your project.  If you want to see how Same Day Dumpsters measures up to this list, just give us a call.
