The Crazy Uses of Scratch ‘n Sniff!

TODAY’S WEEKLY CALENDAR FUN FACT:
PLAYSTATION 1 RELEASED TWO VIDEO GAMES WITH SCRATCH ‘N SNIFF DISCS. FIFA 2001 SMELLED LIKE A SOCCER FIELD WHILE GRAN TURISMO 2 SMELLED LIKE CAR TIRES.
Scratch ‘n Sniff has been around since 1965 when those infamous smelly stickers were produced.  There have been thousands of copycats to the original sticker run and many folks have taken the process into other mediums and marketing channels.  But how does it work?
Scratch ‘n Sniff is made possible through a process called microencapsulation.  Scented oils, or aroma generating chemicals are encapsulated in gelatin or plastic spheres that are naked to the human eye.  Essentially, the basic polymer and scent chemical are mixed in a reactor and then blended by a rotating blade at a super high rate of speed.  This process allows the oil to bead into the small droplets that can’t be seen.  You smell the odor when you scratch these bubbles and pop them to release the scent that is inside.
Aside from stickers and toys, this process has also been used on album covers and artwork, marketing, clothing, home decor, literature and gaming.  It has even been used in law enforcement and drug prevention to help folks identify what different drugs smell like so they can be identified on the streets.  You come across a form of scratch ‘n sniff every day – from those perfume ads in magazines to clothing companies selling fruit scented clothing for kids.  Soon it will end up in publicly saturated places as a way to enhance your overall experience and block out the typical gross odors these locations accumulate.  Scratch ‘n Sniff still peaks curiosity levels so don’t expect it to disappear anytime soon.
Conversation Ice Breaker Factoid:  Katy Perry’s album “Teenage Dream” used the Scratch ‘n Sniff process to smell like cotton candy.
From fruitful stickers to denim jeans, you won’t believe what the world of Scratch ‘n Sniff has gotten into! Check out the vid to see some of the crazy for yourself!

How Big Is A 5 Yard Dumpster?

The Same Day Dumpsters 5 Yard Commercial and Residential Dumpster Review…
How Big Is A 5 Yard Dumpster?
A 5 yard dumpster rental holds 5 cubic yards of debris.  This would come out to 1 to 2 pick up truck loads or 20 standard garbage cans full of trash.  A 5 yard dumpster rental is perfect for small residential or commercial use and is most popular as a lowboy or a typical alley dumpster.  Lowboys are designed to have shorter walls and no roof for easier access and maintenance.  Most 5 yard dumpsters are used for a short event, smaller renovation or project with a quick time frame.
This type of container is ideal for small projects with both light and heavy debris types.  One of the best uses of a 5 yard dumpster rental is when you have a pipe burst or flooding in your basement and need a room full of items hauled away.  In such cases, contact your local dumpster rental company and they will have a 5 yard bin your way as soon as possible.
How Much Does A 5 Yard Dumpster Rental Cost?
A 5 yard dumpster rental can cost anywhere from $200 – $350 based on the region in which you are located and the companies serving that area.  Same Day Dumpsters offers a 10 day rental period for $250.  It’s a good idea to call around to different dumpster rental services and compare pricing.  Ask if they offer discounts to seniors or military as well.

What Kind of Projects Can A 5 Yard Dumpster Typically Handle?
A 5 yard dumpster can be used for small residential and commercial projects.  Here are a few examples of the types of projects that a dumpster of this size can help efficiently.
5 Yard Residential Dumpster
  • Single Room Remodels
  • An Attic, Basement or Garage Clean Out
  • Floor Removal From Small To Medium Sized Room
  • Removing Smaller Yard Debris
  • Moving Clean Ups Or Clean Outs
5 Yard Commercial Dumpster
  • 10 to 15 Square Roofing Job
  • Small Porch Removal
  • Concrete Repair Jobs
  • Trimming Trees/Shrubs and Small Landscaping Jobs
  • Restaurant And/Or Business Trash
  • Construction Clean Up And Material Holds
While by no means a complete list of uses for a 5 yard dumpster rental, this list can give you a clear picture of what this size can accommodate.

How Do I Know If I Need A 5 Yard Dumpster?
Usually you would consider renting a 5 yard bin if you have a smaller project that will produce a bit more trash and debris than what you can safely throw away in regular garbage cans or would be too much for your waste management company to haul away.  While on the smaller side, these dumpsters can still hold nearly 5 tons of debris so don’t be shy about disposing of the following material types:
  • Concrete
  • Brick
  • Asphalt
  • Sod
  • Dirt
  • Rocks
  • Cinder Blocks
  • Stumps
  • Sand
Of course you can toss nearly other type of rubbish in a 5 yard dumpster as well but be aware that there is a universal list of hazardous materials or prohibited items that can NEVER be placed into a dumpster rental, no matter where you live or what company you use.  Check with your dumpster rental company to ask about weight limits on heavier debris.  They should have plenty of experience in this industry and be able to tell you about how high most materials will stack safely without incurring any penalties or fees.
Extra Dumpster Rental Tips:
  • When choosing a dumpster rental company near you, the most important thing you should look for is how they communicate with you.  This is crucial because not only does it reflect how you will be treated but how any problems that may arise might be handled.  You want the best service possible to ensure a successful rental.
  • Many townships and cities require a permit for you to have a dumpster on the street or even in your driveway.  Call your town hall to find out if you definitely need one, how much it would be and how to go about filing for one.
  • It may seem daunting to try and fit all of your debris into a dumpster without overfilling it or causing a safety risk but it can be done if you sort items correctly and stack them in specific ways.
Find A Dumpster Rental Company Near You That Offers 5 Yard Dumpsters
Always do a bit of research before you choose the best dumpster rental company for you and your project needs.  Search engines and word-of-mouth are great ways to find a reliable service.  Be sure to call around and speak with several different companies so you can gauge how they treat you, how knowledgeable they are and how quickly they might be able to resolve issues.  You can always read Google reviews about a company or check their status with your state’s Better Business Bureau.  It may seem silly to do research about a company that is dropping off a dumpster but you will don’t want to be left hanging or lose money if a problem occurs that needs immediate attention.

How To Get Rid Of That Old Mattress

How To Get Rid Of That Old Mattress
While it may serve you well for many years, there comes the day when your mattress is no longer useful.  Getting a new mattress can be exciting and much needed for your poor back but what happens to old reliable?  You may have seen mattresses left on curbs, in alleyways, in the middle of a field or even at the bottom of a lake – don’t ask – but those are actually the worst things you can do to get rid of it.
Mattresses pose a problem because they aren’t eco-friendly and can cause harm to the environment.  Taking it to a landfill will usually result in extra fees because they are bulky, hard to compact and can cause flammable, toxic air pockets to form on dump sites.  While a typical mattress is comprised of wood, steel, cotton and polyurethane foam, usually only the foam is recyclable.
So, how DO you dispose of an old mattress properly?
Out With The Old, In With The New
When you purchase a new mattress, many stores will offer mattress pick up and disposal as part of your purchase price.  If it isn’t, ask the retailer because they might still do it for a small fee.  You can also ask the retailer if they can return your old mattress to the manufacturer or give you the information to contact them yourself.  Nowadays, manufacturer’s are taking on the responsibility of recycling old mattresses.  Considering there are around 50,000 mattresses being disposed of each day, that is a reassuring thought!
Spread the Love
If your mattress is gently used, consider giving it away.  You can offer it friends and family or even donate it to a charity.  As long as the mattress isn’t infested with bed bugs or in terrible shape, charities will give it to families in need and it can go on being useful for a while longer.  Some charities that will accept mattress donations are: GoodwillHabitat for HumanitySalvation Army Furniture Banks, domestic violence shelters and your local homeless shelters.  Salvation Army will even come to your home and pick up the mattress free of charge.  You can even check with local churches and see if they have any families that need such items or have any programs for donation.
mattress on curb
List It
Sometimes you just can’t seem to find anyone who wants the mattress.  In this case, consider listing it for free online.  The Craigslist “FREE” section is a great place to move items quickly, especially if you are near a highly populated area.  Don’t be discouraged if you get a few people who say they will come for it and don’t.  You should get enough inquiries to quickly balance out those duds and find a new home for your old friend.  There are even Facebook Groups devoted to Garage Sale Items or Free Items, garage sale sites like Bookoo and apps like OfferUp and LetGo.  You may even have luck with your community paper or by posting a flyer on your town hall/recreation center community board.
If your mattress is fairly new or in excellent shape, you may want to consider selling it for a few bucks on the same sites, groups and apps.
Recycle Or Repurpose
There are some recycling companies that can reuse different parts of a mattress and turn them into new products.  For instance, the foam of a mattress can be shred into smaller pieces and used to make new pillows.  You can search for mattress recycling companies near you or check out this Plush Beds guide for companies in each state.  Another great option is the site Freecycle, which is like a Craigslist for recycling items.  Also, check with your township or municipality to see if they offer any recycling programs for mattresses or if they have information for a local recycler.  If you have a program in your city, they will come pick up that used mattress from your curb.
An interesting trend happening lately is that people are breaking down mattresses on their own and recycling or reusing the parts.  There are entire groups and pages dedicated to finding uses for old mattress parts on Facebook and Pinterest.  Even sites like Shareably offer suggestions on how to be creative with all that wood, steel, cotton, box springs and foam in your old mattress.
If you have the right tools and a little time, simply cut the perimeter of the cloth covering and peel both the cloth and foam away from the box springs and wooden frame.  You can reuse them into any creative way you see fit or just roll the materials into a compact bundle and put in your home recycling bin.  Box springs can be recycled or sold for scrap and that wood frame can be burned or cut up into wood chips.
mattresses
Trash Talk
Sometimes you run out of time and just want that old mattress gone immediately.  Call your local waste management company and ask if they will take mattresses.  They may pick it up for a small fee.  If they simply can’t take the mattress then a junk removal service or dumpster rental company will have no problem disposing of your mattress or other bulky items.  If you tell the company during scheduling that you want the item recycled, they do their best to find the right facility to accommodate your request.  Check the pricing on what it would take to dispose of your mattress because they might be more than it’s worth spending for disposal.  These options are usually a last resort after you have exhausted all the other suggestions above.
So Long, Good Buddy
That mattress might have seen you through different phases of your life or stuck by your side through several moves but it eventually retires.  Instead of sending your poor mattress to a dark alley or chucking it into the ocean, consider all of the eco-friendly and responsible ways to properly dispose of it.  A mattress being tossed carelessly aside or stuck in a landfill to rot into a toxic bubble can cause a great deal of harm to the environment and everyone’s health.  While it may take a few minutes to place a phone call or locate a program that will properly recycle or reuse that old mattress, it’s well worth it to keep our living space clean.

Pest Free Dumpster Rentals

How To Keep Pests Out Of Your Dumpster!
It happens.  You rent a dumpster and during the course of its time outside of your project site, you notice it has become a wildlife hotel.  Whether it’s bears and raccoons or mice and maggots, piles of trash and debris tend to attract the attention of our nature dwelling neighbors.  It may seem nearly impossible to stop a creature from crawling into your dumpster but there are definitely things you can implement to stop this habit.
The Right Place
Try and place your dumpster at least 50 feet away from your establishment or property.  This helps deter any pests that may venture near from checking out your site as well or posing a safety threat to anyone coming and going.  It also keeps obnoxious smells from lingering too close to where you lay your head down at night.
Always put the dumpster on concrete whether it be a parking lot, driveway or slab.  If you put a dumpster rental in grass, rodents like to build nests underneath.  You definitely don’t want to be tossing something in the container and have a family of rats skittering around your feet.  Avoiding the grass also helps keep you and your environment safe.  If you have anything inside the dumpster that may leak, that could potentially find its way into groundwater and cause considerable health and safety concerns.  If you don’t have a driveway or slab, the street is your best bet.

No Food Debris
Pests are looking for their next meal and that is why they congregate near dumpsters or garbage cans.  That McDonald’s bag you just tossed in might just be the trigger for attracting a whole slew of animals and insects.  Food rots and creates a foul odor that immediately disperses into the surrounding air.  Rotting food breeds flies that cause maggots and, trust me, there’s nothing more gross than a sweltering pile of them on some week old meat.  The odors tend to attract larger animals such as raccoons, foxes and bears.  Raccoons get into places you couldn’t imagine and can be quite aggressive when encountered.  Your best bet for a safe, clean and pleasant smelling experience is to keep food waste OUT of your dumpster rental.
Cover It Up
A great way to keep pests out of dumpsters is by sealing the tops.  Many smaller dumpsters come with lids that can be secured.  Make it a habit to keep that lid secured when not in use.  Dumpter rentals are a bit harder because they are usually open on top but you can buy a cheap tarp and some bungee cords from your local hardware store to secure it.  They do a great job of not only keeping wildlife at bay but keeping the elements out as well.
Clean, Clean, Clean
One of the best ways to avoid pest infestation is by keeping your dumpster clean.  In the case of dumpster rentals, your local dumpster rental company automatically cleans their equipment between clients.  Just make sure that when your dumpster is delivered, the inside is clean and not full of gunk or debris.  If it is, simply ask them for a clean container or that they take the appropriate actions to clean yours so it doesn’t attract critters.  Your dumpster should always be empty and ready for you to use.  A dumpster rental service that has dirty dumpsters is not one you should be using.
In the case of smaller dumpsters outside of businesses or restaurants, you can’t help that there is food waste in your garbage.  To avoid buildup of nasty, rotting waste, use a hose and clean it out after it’s emptied.  You can even hire professional dumpster cleaning companies to come freshen it up for you at certain intervals.
raccoons in trash
What Smell?
Depending on what you are disposing of, dumpsters can accumulate some crazy smells.  While they may be positively nauseating to us, it’s these odors that attract bugs and creatures.  Rats follow scents straight to their origins in search for food so it’s best to cap those smells as soon as you can.  You can buy a dumpster deodorizer to break down the grease and organics causing foul odors to occur.  Not only will you deter pests but you’ll give the noses of you and your employees a much deserved reprieve.
Repel ‘Em
Another great way to keep your dumpsters from becoming critter condos is to use repellents.  Do not use anything with poison or harmful chemicals because these can not only injure or kill the animals but are harmful to pets, people and the environment.  Ammonia and water is a common solution that keeps animals away and isn’t harmful if diluted correctly.  For other pests, use what is already known in nature to your advantage.  For example, if you have an infestation of rabbits or skunks, spray fox or coyote urine around the dumpster.  This will alert them that a predator is near and scare them off.
No matter what solution you use, be sure to reapply after rainfall.
No matter what type of animals are prone to your area, there are different solutions for keeping them out of your dumpster.  If you take the time to put a few of these into action, you will have less headaches in the long run and stay on track to a successful and efficient project completion.  If you have any severe infestations that surpass the ideas presented here, contact your local pest control services or city/county animal control office for additional help.  Above all, stay safe and keep it clean!

The Most Attractive Thing…

“THE MOST ATTRACTIVE THING ABOUT YOU SHOULD HAVE LESS TO DO WITH YOUR FACE OR BODY AND MORE TO DO WITH YOUR ATTITUDE AND HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE.” – GERMANY KENT

Isn’t this the truth!?!  Too many folks worry about material things and overlook the most important gift you can give yourself.  The ability to make others feel good and the power of kindness.  Care and compassion truly open doors in the world that you have never known possible.  Some imagine that fame and money will open doors, and they do, but it ends up costing you a heavy price.  Whether you pay by money, favors or expectations, that cold, quick way to advance costs more than you should ever pay.
However, opening doors with kindness, love and special care only brings more of the same back to you and never inflicts a cost.  It is free and you will notice benefits surrounding you simply because you took the time to treat others with care.
Eventually looks fade but your personality and your intellect do not.  Fifty years from now, folks won’t remember what you wore to that graduation dinner or how your hair was coiffed.  It won’t matter how shiny your cufflinks are or how much of a six-pack you have.  What people truly remember is how you made them FEEL.  If you treated them with care and compassion, they will always speak true of you but if you are harmful and callous in your interactions, this too will spread and you will find yourself labeled like a poison under a cabinet and shut away.
This is a very valuable lesson and one we don’t take lightly at Same Day Dumpsters.  Sure, our equipment may be clean and shiny or we may offer the best options around but it’s how we treat our customers that counts.  It’s the careful consideration we place on each client’s situation and the impeccable service we strive to provide that matters.  From the first phone call to the final pickup, we make sure that every customer need is met and that we try to do the very best we can for every project.  Reliability and knowledge are the keys to a successful endeavor and we use that to back our customer satisfaction.
Each situation is unique and every client has different requirements.  We make sure that whether it’s a simple clean out or a late night emergency, our customers feel the care and determination we have to solve their problems or lighten their burdens.  And while feeling the difference might not matter now, it does when a problem strikes unexpectedly and you need someone you can count on.  Sure, our trucks may be fancy and our dumpsters may be pretty but it is our strive to provide amazing customer service that counts.

DIY Demo Safety Tips

Smashing up walls and floors can be a huge stress-reliever and a ton of fun during a demolition.  There may be quite a few steps during a renovation but it truly can’t begin until the old, decrepit or outdated items are removed.  Many folks do the demolition themselves to save money but so many do it because it’s just plain fun to be allowed to destroy something in a controlled setting.
While it may be completely thrilling to wreak havoc on those bedroom walls, there is a lot more to demo than swinging a sledgehammer.  Often overlooked but critically important is how you focus on safety while demolishing.  Every project is unique and may require more effort or different tools to complete the job but there should be a baseline of protection for yourself or those who are carrying out the demolition.
How To Protect Yourself During A Demolition
SAFETY GLASSES – There are so many different types of safety glasses, including bifocal styles, and they are all pretty inexpensive.  The best option would be wraparound glasses because they offer maximum protection and can come with anti-glare or tinted lenses.  Safety glasses are probably the most important of all safety tools to have with you because they not only protect your eyes from sharp materials jabbing your eye or debris flying into them but keep dust particles and pollutants in the air away from your peepers.  Keep a few pairs laying around so you never find yourself without a set.
BOOTS – This isn’t usually a thought when doing demo but it makes the most sense.  Sneakers or gym shoes might protect you from glass particles or general debris but they are useless when it comes to stepping on nails.  You can get a decent pair of thick-sole work boots for a fair price or splurge on more expensive models and steel-toed options.  It is worth it to not feel a nail going through your foot or the horrendous pain and damage caused by a vanity falling on your unprotected toes.
Using Safety Glasses
COVERALLS – If you have a jumpsuit or work coveralls, it is wise to wear them during demolition so you don’t mess up your clothes with all of the dust and debris that accompanies it.  Many folks choose to wear old clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty but then you are bringing those harmful spores or particles back to your own home and into the very air you and your family breathe.  The best way to reduce risk is to purchase disposable paper coveralls that you can put on and take off on the job site.  This way you aren’t tracking anything extra into clean environments.
If your demo is taking place inside your residence, be sure to seal it off from the rest of the home as best as possible.  Plastic sheeting taped to the walls, ceiling and floor are ideal at keeping out debris.  Also completely cover any air vents in the demo space so the harmful particles kicked up don’t fly through your HVAC system.
GLOVES / HARD HAT – Gloves should be something that you have in your toolbox or laying around the job site.  Even if you are demoing your own home, gloves can protect your hands from cuts, scrapes, bruises and burns.  They are pretty inexpensive and can save you from severe pain.  Hard hats on a home remodel?  It may seem like only construction crews or heavy duty work requires the use of a hard hat but take a look at your project and gauge if it might be necessary for yours.  Some smaller residential projects or ceiling repairs might have a particular task or hazard that could come down on top of you.  Better safe than sorry.
TURN IT OFF – Before you start any work, make sure all of the supplies are shut off in that area.  Electric, gas, water, steam, sewer and other service lines might need to be capped off or halted depending on what the project requires.  You can put yourself in a lot of danger or make a hugely unnecessary mess by leaving utilities on while you work the area.  If you need light, run an extension cord and use a utility light.
Demolition Safety
TOP TO BOTTOM – Always work top to bottom during a demolition so you don’t run the risk of having materials collapse on top of you.  While it may seem like common sense, you’d be surprised how many individuals get excited to smash into something and are needlessly injured by not taking a few seconds to plan a clean demolition.  Depending on the materials, they could have used that hard hat, huh?
FIRE EXTINGUISHER – Because you just never know.  A small fire extinguisher isn’t a bad idea to have around a work site, even if it is a small bathroom remodel.  Accidents can happen to the best of us and sometimes circumstances align in a way that we can’t foresee that can cause a pretty big mishap.  It’s better to be prepared and not need it than need it and not have it.
ASBESTOS – This isn’t something to take lightly because asbestos in the air is known to cause cancer.  Newer homes and construction don’t usually have this problem but if you are remodeling an older structure, there may be building materials containing asbestos fibers.  You can always get the area tested by a professional prior to demolition if you suspect your structure is old enough to possess the possibility of asbestos.  Your state and county will have a list of accredited companies you can choose from.  If you are doing a demo and uncover asbestos, leave the area immediately and notify a trained professional so they can come remove the materials.  If the materials containing asbestos are in good condition and undisturbed, it is a good idea to leave them alone.
When you’re ready to start your demo and need to put that debris somewhere, rent Chicagoland’s trusty blue dumpster!  Contact Burr Ridge Dumpster Rental to find out how!

In The Streets: A Dumpster Rental in Lemont

IN THE STREETS: A DUMPSTER RENTAL IN LEMONT
On this installment of “In The Streets” we journey to the beautiful suburb of Lemont!  Valerie Sowell sent us this shot after she had massive leaking in her basement that wrought a bit of destruction to her home.  It was a few days of chaos but everything was eventually handled and brought back to normal.
According to Mrs. Sowell, some plumbing had gone awry and flooded her basement.  Several long stretches of drywall and wood had to be cut away and replaced as well as mold remediation work on the walls and floor.  After talking with her insurance provider and following the necessary procedures, Valerie had a crew suck out standing water and begin the job of cleaning up the aftermath.  Unfortunately, a closet that housed cardboard boxes of files and various family keepsakes was hit and damaged quite a large haul of items.  Valerie also determined that she wasn’t going to keep a few pieces of furniture that got the initial brunt of the problem and decided that a personal clean out was in order at the same time the work crew was getting rid of ruined and hazardous materials.
Mrs. Sowell had heard about Same Day Dumpsters through a friend who recently cleaned out her deceased mother’s home and decided to give us a try.  She couldn’t believe how quick we had a trusty blue dumpster on her property and how affordable our rates were.  When our driver arrived, Valerie had a small concern about the dumpster cracking or damaging her beautiful driveway but she was quickly relieved to find out that we put protective boards down in an attempt to prevent such things from occurring.
Thank you so much, Valerie, for sharing your story with us and allowing us to use your amazing picture in our segment!  We truly appreciate working with you and are beyond happy that your situation was rectified and life returned to normal.  Same Day Dumpsters works hard to accommodate every situation and help alleviate the stress of some of life’s more challenging difficulties.  We hope to be able to serve you again in the future!
We LOVE to hear what projects you are using a Same Day Dumpster for so send us a photo!
