IN THE STREETS: A DUMPSTER RENTAL IN SCHAUMBURG

“In The Streets” highlights the adventures of Mr. Andy Clark in Schaumburg, Illinois.  Andy had just bought a home in the area that needed a whole helping of TLC.  The only issue was that Andy had a tight rehab budget and couldn’t afford a lot of excess charges.  This young homeowner had to make a lot of tough decisions in order to restore his new home to glory.

According to Mr. Clark, the foundation of the home was strong and the guts were still viable.  There was water damage in the living room and second bedroom that required drywall and studs to be replaced in those two rooms but other than that, the home mostly needed cosmetic changes.  Andy upgraded the bathrooms and kitchen while painting the rest of the home and refinishing the existing hardwood throughout the rest.  We wish Andy the best of luck on this project and look forward to his plans at the end of the summer to spruce up the front yard landscaping and repair the driveway and porch concrete!

Trash Cookies Recipe

FOR A PRINTABLE COPY OF THIS RECIPE, CLICK HERE!

TRASH COOKIES RECIPE

BY HEATHER SCHMITT-GONZALEZ

YOU WILL NEED:

2 1/4 cups all purpose, unbleached flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon fine sea salt
2/3 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 to 2 cups of add-ins (oreos, potato chips, pretzels, m&m’s, reese’s pieces,
sprinkles, nuts, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, cereal, marshmallows, etc.)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in bowl. Set aside.
2. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter, brown sugar and sugar together until light and
   creamy. Beat in eggs and vanilla extract. Add flour mixture and beat gently until well combined. Fold in the add-ins.
3. Cover dough and refrigerate for one hour.
4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
5. Line a couple of baking sheets with parchment paper or non-stick spray. Scoop
   rounded tablespoons onto baking sheets with at least 1 to 2 inch space in between.
6. Bake for 10 minutes or until edges are golden brown.
7. Remove and let cookies cool.

A Dangerous Situation? How Did We Do?

“We had an excellent experience with Same Day Dumpsters, they were SO GREAT to deal with!!! Their response time was lightening fast and they totally accommodated our time needs, despite us needing the dumpster within 48 hours. The driver showed up EXACTLY when he said he would (6am in the morning!) and communicated with us clearly about the pick up time. We live on a busy road and a water main, right in front of our house, burst the night before the dumpster was scheduled to be picked up…seriously I could not make this stuff up. So because of a possible sink hole situation, part of our driveway was sectioned off with barricades by the county. Despite this obstacle, Martin masterfully executed the dumpster retrieval with absolutely no contact to the barricades or our yard…it was nothing short of majorly impressive. In The Streets: A Dumpster Rental in Naperville

IN THE STREETS: A DUMPSTER RENTAL IN NAPERVILLE

Today’s “In The Streets” project highlight comes from Anthony Williams who was working on a home in Naperville.  A repeat customer and suburban house flipper, Anthony uses Same Day Dumpsters for all of his jobs.  From small clean outs to massive gut rehabs, he has used several different dumpster sizes over the last couple of years.

For this particular project, Anthony wanted to show us our dumpsters hard at work in the middle of a rehab.  A section of the basement floor was torn up to replace faulty piping and never repaired so that was a huge item on his fix list.  Over the course of a few months, Anthony had contractors replace faulty wiring, plumbing and renovated the kitchen and bathrooms.  With a little paint for each of the rooms and restoration of the beautiful antique hardwood floors, the rest of the house just needed a little spruce up.  It isn’t clear what Anthony has done or will do with the property – sell or hold as rental property – but we wish him the best with this and future endeavors!

Anthony had originally come to use Same Day Dumpsters by comparing prices and services in his area.  After deciding we were the best fit for his project, he scheduled his first dumpster delivery with us.  Fast forward to nowadays and he still chooses the reliable blue dumpster company time and time again.  We are so grateful to have such a fantastic working relationship with him and are humbled that he continues to utilize our services after all this time.  A huge thank you to Anthony for sharing this picture and to all of our clients for allowing us to ride along on their journey!

How You Make Them Feel…

It may not seem like simply being kind could hold that much power but it TRULY can.  In your life, do you gravitate towards friends or family members that understand you and make you feel better?  Do you shop at certain places over others because of how you FEEL shopping there?  Do you feel secure that the services and good you are receiving are top-notch?  Maybe it was the dentist office receptionist or the dentist themselves who made you want to come back.  Regardless of the situation, there are things/places/people you are drawn to in life because of how they make you feel.

How To Get Rid Of That Old Couch

How To Get Rid Of That Old Couch

It will happen at some point.  That beloved, trusty couch that got you through college keggers, early learning stages of your marriage and the sticky hands of your first child, has seen it’s final days.  You are ready to approach the next stage of life with a new piece of furniture better suited to carry the weight of the future.  But, with various discolorations, fruit punch stains, tears and a loose spring or two, how exactly do you retire your old pal?

Spread the Love

First off, if the couch isn’t a safety hazard, ask friends and relatives if they, or anyone they know, might need it.  There is always a college kid or someone who just embarked into the world on their own that may not have the dough for a new piece of furniture and isn’t too picky.  That old couch can provide a few more memories for someone else’s new beginning.

If no one you know wants Old Faithful, consider donating it.  Again, the couch should be usable and not a health hazard in order to donate to someone in need.  Thrift shops like Salvation Army and Goodwill can pick your items up for FREE if they are in decent enough shape.  Habitat for Humanity has a ReStore that will also pick up appliances, toilets and other items of that nature.

Use your best judgement.  If your couch has had its last hurrah and shouldn’t be donated, use the other options listed below.

Curb Appeal

Contact your local garbage provider/waste management service to see if they would consider picking up an item as large as a couch.  You might get lucky and they will tell you just to toss it next to your garbage cans on trash collection day.  Some companies will pick it up for free while others might pick it up but charge you an additional fee.  This will depend on the region in which you live but that might cost you an additional $50 – $75.  You may be required to put a special tag on it that may only cost $10 or something of that nature.  Your couch will go straight to a landfill so if you care about the environment, this might not be the best option for you.

When a company refuses to pick up the larger items, you can try your luck with putting it on the curb for garbage pickers. Many times they will come around and take it off of your hands for you. If it doesn’t get picked up in a couple of days, you will need to dispose of it in another way so you don’t incur the wraith of your village and get fined for having it clutter up the curb for too long.

List It

Craigslist is one of the greatest inventions of our modern time.  You can list just about anything in the “FREE” section and someone will find a use for it.  It doesn’t matter how old or disgusting your item might be, the adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” makes its home on Craigslist.  This works exceptionally well if you live close to a metropolis or urban area.  Because the item is free, you may have a few no-shows and miscommunication but don’t despair.  There should be enough people that you’ll get the one who does finally show.

Some folks put a small price on the items to weed out the lookie-loos and get more serious inquiries but it all depends on how fast you want it to move.  If you have a couch on its last legs, don’t list it for $50.  Put $1 or $5 on it and get it out of your hair.  Also take into consideration that these individuals will have to come pick up the heavy item and may need a moment to get help or a vehicle that can haul it.

If your item is fairly new or in amazing shape, you can even put a decent price on it and try to make a few bucks.

Aside from Craigslist, you can try Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Groups devoted to Garage Sales or Free Items, apps like LetGo, OfferUp, Etc., garage sale sites like Bookoo or even your local community paper and town hall/recreation center community board.

Out With The Old, In With The New

If you recently purchased a new couch, your furniture store might take the old one for FREE.  Many times the delivery guys can haul it away for you when they bring your new furniture.  Check with the company before you buy and inquire if they might do this for you.  If not, ask the delivery guys themselves.  They might haul it out for some cash.

Trash Talk

Sometimes it might seem easier to haul that old couch to the dump yourself.  Brace yourself though, landfills and dumps will charge you to drop off that bulky item.  You may have to pay per piece, per pound or both so don’t be surprised.  Some folks have paid $100 or more to drop off the old couch.  You also have to factor in that you need the proper vehicle to load your couch and that your nearest dump station might be a little further than anticipated.  If you live 50 miles from the nearest town and drive a VW Bug, you might be in trouble.

Another factor to consider about this option is that your couch will just end up piled in the landfill.  Around 9.8 million tons of furniture end up in landfills every year, which not only takes up precious space we have in those dumps, but is not good for our environment.

Junk Removal

A junk removal service or dumpster rental company should have no problem taking those large pieces of furniture off of your hands.  If you tell them you want it recycled, they will do their very best to ensure that as much that can be recycled, WILL be.  With junk removal, they can pick up one piece if needed while a small dumpster can hold quite a few pieces of furniture.  Again, talk with the company representative about recycling options prior to scheduling service.

This option might be more costly than what you can spend to remove the couch so you may want to exhaust the other options first before revisiting this.

So Long, Old Friend

It may be hard to get rid of that couch that carries a lot of memories and emotions for you but, at some point, that piece of furniture could become a hazard to you, your children and your pets.  There are many options when it comes to removing your old couch and you should consider what would be best for you regarding time, effort and intent.  When all is said and done, your old pal could be recycled into new furniture or given to someone in need.  The point is to not be discouraged if the avenue you chose to go with doesn’t pan out and to try your luck with another direction.

How To Make Your Garage Eco-Friendly

For some people a garage is simply a place to park your vehicle or store outdoor and excess items but for others, it’s the main hub for projects and activities.  Some garages are even makeshift dens or serve as the obligatory man cave where people can relax, catch a ball game and relax with friends.  No matter what use you have for your garage space, there are a few slight changes you can implement to have a better impact on the environment for your children and children’s children.  Let’s take a look at some!

Sealing/Weatherproofing

Garages have a tendency to be huge energy wasters.  They are not usually sealed very well from the elements and force precious heat to escape.  Sometimes a garage might even be heated or cooled to protect the priceless items stored within and those leaks can cause you to run the heat or a/c more than necessary, needlessly increasing the price of your electric bills.  A great way to save money and energy while keeping the inside of your garage a perfect temperature is to use weather stripping around leaky doors or windows and insulation for those thin walls.

By sealing up the inner system and preventing drafts, you use up less energy which is not only good for the environment but for your wallet as well.

Curb Appeal

A fantastic option with multiple benefits is to switch out your large garage door for a more eco-friendly solution.  These doors are made from bio-degradable materials and can be crafted from aluminum and recycled steel.  They are also heavily insulated to reduce energy loss and keep those bills low for you.  An amazing plus to having a more environmentally friendly door is that they raise your home’s curb appeal.  Often beautifully crafted, these doors add a “WOW” factor that can really spruce up a home’s appearance.

Fluid Disposal

Most of the time a garage is the ideal place to perform maintenance on your vehicle.  Oil, brake fluid and anti-freeze may be crucial to your car’s performance but they are highly hazardous to Mother Earth when they are dumped down drains or poured into the grass.  There are ways to responsibly recycle hazardous materials safely.  Keep containers in your garage to store such fluids and, when it is time to discard them, take them to your local mechanic’s shop or contact your village hall to find out if they have disposal locations or recycling programs for such items.

Be sure to keep any such fluids, paints and chemicals up high or locked away so tiny hands don’t accidentally spill or ingest them.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

Aside from fluids, you can recycle most of what you use every day.  Set up a small station for aluminum and glass as well as one for paper and junk mail.  Use bio-degradable trash bags and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to discard recyclables with you.  Not only are you providing safer options for trash disposal but you may just spur your loved ones into taking our responsibility to the Earth more seriously.

Smart Electric

Many garages have a single strip of incandescent lighting that hangs in the center of the space or along a work area.  A better idea would be to replace that with LED lighting.  LED lights use less energy than regular bulbs and are able to light up more space, practically eliminating all shadows.  LED lights also run much cooler than traditional lighting severely decreasing the potential for a fire hazard.

Another neat trick is to install a skylight in your garage roof to allow more natural light to envelope, brighten and heat the space during the day.  If you rarely use your garage, this may not be the most cost-efficient or practical solution for you so you may only want to install the LED lighting.

Hello Tesla

This option is only if you are feeling super ambitious and want to be an environmentally friendly super soldier.  You could switch to an electric car and install your own charging station within your garage.  Electric cars are becoming more popular so the idea is not completely off base.  If you have a multiple bay garage, you could even install one on one side for a loved one or anybody that needs a quick refresh.  I do have to admit that the Tesla Model S looks pretty sweet.

To Go Green Or Not To Go Green…

This is a question that only you can answer.  While you don’t have to go to extremes, doing a few little changes, such as LED lighting or recycling vehicle fluids, can make an incredible impact on saving our environment and preserving quality air and living space for ourselves.  There are other things you can do in your daily life to decrease your footprint on the Earth and make her breathe a little bit easier but these few suggestions are a great way to jump start that line of thinking.  We only have one Earth and it’s our job to do what we can to make her last, even if it is only one or two small changes.  It means the world to our world.
