Father’s Day Wackiness!

TODAY’S WEEKLY CALENDAR FUN FACT:

Father’s Day did not begin with the same illustrious gusto as Mother’s Day.  Many folks felt that “fathers didn’t have the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.”  Luckily, there were many who disagreed with this view and fought to have an official day for the dads out there.  Sonora Smart Dodd, a child raised by a widower, wanted the same appreciation for male parents and took to the streets to rally support.  With the backing of local churches, stores, the YMCA and certain government officials, the state of Washington was the first to celebrate Father’s Day on June 19th, 1910.

Not everyone took to this holiday right away with many men feeling it domesticated manliness.  The holiday didn’t start to be seen in a positive light until after WWII.  Advertisers started to argue that Father’s Day was a way to support the war effort and honor all those American troops.  This did the trick, and though not an official national holiday, it was widely celebrated and became a tradition.

President Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day as an official National Holiday in 1972, 58 years AFTER Mother’s Day had been officially declared.  We celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June and the day has become synonymous with barbecues of all shapes and sizes.

Soda has long been a big part of our daily lives.  Whether you love it or hate it, drink it or don’t, you are definitely familiar with various kooky commercials or soda trends.  With apparel, live events and mass sponsorship, it seems that one can’t get away from good ‘ole soda pop.  The truth is that the history of this fizzy beverage is quite odd and somewhat scandalous.

Soda was originally sold in pharmacies during the late 19th century as a cure-all for things like indigestion, impotence, anxiety, alcoholism, opium addictions and even scurvy.  After the crown cap was developed in 1891 and the automatic glass blowing machine debuted in 1899, prices of soft drinks dropped drastically and were easier to get, which made the carbonated beverage truly flourish.  Some of the earliest experimental flavors were dandelions, ginger, lemon, birch bark, coca and kola.  Even today, interesting flavors can be found all over the globe.  White Fungus Bird’s Nest from Vietnam, Grass Jelly from Malaysia, Black Garlic from Switzerland, Cucumber Soda and Salty Watermelon from Japan and Onion from South Korea are a few examples of what you can find to quench your curious thirst.

You may have noticed that in the United States alone, there are several terms for the fizzy drink.  Depending on region, it can be called “pop,” “soda,” “coke” or even simply “soft drinks.”  They are classified as soft drinks because alcohol is labeled hard drinks.  In England they are called “fizzy drinks” and the Irish actually call them “minerals.”  However, the universal term seems to be soda pop.  The term “soda” is derived from the common mineral in natural springs, sodium, and “pop” was coined in 1812 in reference to the sound of a carbonated drink being opened.

The first soft drink ever created was in 1767 by a Swedish chemist named Joseph Priestly and German-Swiss jeweler, Jacob Schweppe, fine-tuned the process to create carbonated mineral water.  He is considered the “father of soda” and soon after, companies started producing their own flavored versions of what we consider soda pop.  These included Dr Pepper, Hire’s Root Beer, Moxie and Vernors Ginger Soda.  What is interesting is that Dr Pepper is the only beverage today that isn’t classified as a soda.  It is considered a “distinctly flavored drink” which allows it to be sold in both Coke and Pepsi soda fountains or vending machines.

In The Streets: A Dumpster Rental in Mokena

IN THE STREETS: A DUMPSTER RENTAL IN MOKENA

This installment of “In The Streets” finds us in the south suburb of Mokena, Illinois.   Richard Burnett sent us this photo of one of our 15 yard dumpster rentals being put to good use in a relocation for his brother.  A household of items needed to be pared down and what was left moved out of state.  After several donations to charity, the massive amount of stuff collected made Richard realize it was time to rent a dumpster.

According to Mr. Burnett, his brother had saved several households worth of deceased family members belongings.  What was sentimental was packed securely for the move but there was still a large amount of stuff remaining.  They had donated bags of clothing, furniture, knick-knacks and other useful items to AmVets, Salvation Army and Goodwill but still ended up with rooms full of broken or unusable materials.  Because of time and energy needed for such an endeavor, Richard hired a couple of guys off of Craigslist to haul the remainder to a Same Day Dumpster.

Mr. Burnett had simply Googled dumpster companies and looked into several before deciding to use Same Day Dumpsters.  What clinched it for him was our reputation and price.  He was even impressed with how quickly the dumpster arrived and with how much care we put into preserving the driveway from damage.  Our driver not only secured the dumpster but thoroughly addressed the significant amount of rubbish needing to be removed by offering a couple of tips on how to pack the dumpster more efficiently.
